Computer Experiment One

This is an example of tilt-shift, I think that this filter works really well for this photographs because it means that it brings your focus to the front row of screws. To do this computer experiment I used photoshop. I first clicked on the background layer and made a duplicate layer called background copy.

Then I went to filter at the top and clicked on Blur Gallery, then Tilt-Shift.
I moved the focused part down to the bottom to cover the first row, I made the fade out bit a bit larger so that it wasn't too harsh.

I did this because it was difficult to focus on just one row of screws with the camera because they are all different lengths, so I can use the tilt shift to choose what line of screws I wanted in focus, instead of just the taller screws being in focus for example.

Exam Shoot 1 - Work Record

Plans for the shoot:
For this shoot I intend to recreate my third shoot as I think this went very well the first time, although it could definitely be improved by doing the shoot in the studio. So for this shoot, I am going to go into the studio and set up there as I believe that this will make much better images, they won't have as many problems. As although my third shoot went well, there was problems with the lighting on the edges of the photograph, especially when I did anything other than birds eye view, when I shot the screws from the side, the background of my house was a lot darker and made the photos look much worse.

What I hope to achieve:
I hope that this shoot will show a lot of progression from my third preparatory shoot as I will have put a lot more effort in to this shoot in the studio, partly with how much I have set up, and also with the lighting set up for the exam shoot. None of my previous shoots were done in the studio so this should mean that this shoot is in much better quality.
Furthermore, I will be able to use a good quality tripod in the studio that I wouldn't have had at home which will also mean that my photography should be a lot better as there is a much smaller risk of it shaking.

What I actually achieved:
I am actually very happy with how this shoot turned out and I think that I achieved things that I couldn't have done at home in my house. The lighting was much more direct and professional and easier to control. Furthermore, the tripod is a lot sturdier in the studio and I could take photographs from a lot of different angles.

This is one of my favourite photographs from the first exam shoot, I was really happy with how this one turned out and it is much better than what I could've achieved at home. I am definitely happy that I decided to do this shoot for the exam because it turned out really good in my opinion. I wanted to get some photographs facing the screws because when I tried it out at home it looked really good, however I wasn't able to do it at home because of the background being too dark or cluttered. When I did it in the studio, I didn't have this issue because I shot on a white background.

ISO: 100
F/5.0

I also really like this image from the first exam shoot. I love how you can see all of the shapes of the screws from their shadows, even though you can't really tell from just looking at the screws. This definitely improves the photograph a lot more and I think that although the image looked pretty when I took it in my house, it is not as good as this. You can see that a lot more effort has been put into this shoot than the last. Even by just looking at the set up. It is much more structured and measured, rather than just put down however.

This is the lighting diagram for my first shoot, I used the flowers to represent the screws in this diagram. The snoot was directed at this angle to get the shadows in the place that I wanted them, and for most of the photographs the snoot and light were in that place, although the height of it changed every so often.

What I am going to do next:
Next shoot, I intend to work in the studio again because I think that the photographs worked really well for this one. I will be using cigarettes for the next shoot, both new cigarettes, and already smoked cigarettes, in this shoot, I didn't think about where I wanted the light before I set up, which meant that setting up took longer than I hoped for. So, next shoot, I will work out the lighting set up before anything.

Exam Shoot 1 - Straight Images

ISO: 100
Shutter Speed: 1/2
F/5
I am really happy with this image and how it turned out looking. I took this photograph from above, birds eye view. This meant that the shadows were very easy to see and you can see them and the shape that they are in. Due to the lighting I used, the shadows of most of the screws are very nice and aren't very stretched out, this worked better with the smaller screws rather than the bigger screws, as they were a bit more stretched out. And especially the ones on the right. The position of the light meant that they were a bit stretched out.

ISO: 100
Shutter Speed: 1/3
F/5
This image looks like a skyline of buildings, I really like this because it is quite interesting to look at, you can still see the shadows which are a key part of the shoot in my opinion. I think that this photograph turned out well, the screws are mostly in focus, however because some of them are a lot closer than others, they weren't all in focus, and I think that I have focused mainly on some of the central ones rather than the ones at the front like I should've. However it is difficult to see which ones are in focus on the cameras viewfinder.

Shutter Speed: 1/3
F/4
This is not my favourite image from this shoot. However I do like it. It isn't as good as the previous images because I had knocked over the screws and I tried to put them back up as they were but this proved to be quite difficult which is why they have such an odd shape. They are slightly wonky. However the shadows in this photograph are really defined and I think that they look good.
